A maternity photoshoot is a special occasion to capture the beauty and joy of expecting a baby. The best time to schedule your maternity session is 28-34 weeks, when the tummy is nice and round. This will vary with each woman, and you want to schedule your session when you still feel good, but have a nice belly. When documenting this next chapter, there are multiple things in your mind and one of them is “What to wear for a maternity photoshoot?” Choosing the right clothing and accessories can make a big difference in the final outcome of the photos. There are a few things to keep in mind:
Fitted Or Flowy
The main focus of the photoshoot is your growing belly, so choose clothing that accentuates and flatters your bump. Wearing a tight, fitted maternity dress that shows off all your beautiful curves looks absolutely stunning. However, I also love a flowy, maxi dress as it is incredibly flattering for any shape or size and can hide some of those troublesome areas. Also, Flowy dresses are a great option in this regard. They’re comfortable, classic, and create a flattering silhouette for your maternity photos. Both options make stunning photos. The choice is entirely yours!
Fabrics to avoid for maternity photos
It is best to avoid fabrics that are too tight or restrictive as they can create an unflattering silhouette. Additionally, it is best to avoid fabrics that are too thin or sheer as they can reveal too much skin. Don’t wear stiff cotton because it doesn’t flow nicely and it can be super wrinkly. I would also avoid that super stretchy fabric. You may think it will be good, and there are tons of maternity dresses made from this, but it’s a mistake. It shows every little bump, so if you have a bra on, you can see all the bumps on your back and side. It also can cling awkwardly to your legs while you walk.
Keep the color palette simple
A soft color palette can create a soothing and romantic atmosphere. Some popular color options include: Neutral shades like white, cream, beige, and gray Soft pastels such as pink, blue, and lavender Earthy tones like olive green and terracotta Jewel tones like emerald green and sapphire blue The focus of this session will be on your cute baby bump, and these colors will help to show it off. It’s also a good idea to be careful with patterns. It’s also a good idea to choose colors that complement your skin tone and hair color. For example, if you have a cool skin tone, shades of blue and purple will look great. If you have a warm skin tone, shades of yellow and orange will look great.
Patterns
Patterns can be great for maternity photoshoot. One of things that should be considered while wearing clothes with patterns is: if you select a pattern that is too tiny, it can be too busy and really distracting, especially if there are two contrasting colors. But you also don’t want to select patterns that are big patterns that can be distracting and draw the eye away from the focus of the image. Medium-sized patterns are what you’re going to shoot for here. You also want to make sure that the contrast between the colors in the pattern and the color of the dress isn’t too much. For example, a dark navy pattern on a white dress would be too much contrast. But a cream-colored pattern against a dusty rose-colored dress would be subtle and beautiful.

Texture
Textures can add a lot of dimension to your maternity photos. With that said, I would stick with them only for your extra layers. You can pair a chunky knit sweater with some jeans, wear a lace dress, or an embroidered top. Either way the texture in the clothes will create more interest, therefore making your photos look more beautiful. It’s a great alternative to a print or pattern. Keeping it simple for the main piece is the best way to show off that bump. The more that is going on in the bump area, the less the eye is going to pay attention to a baby being in there.
Dress for the Season
Be sure to consider the weather during your maternity photoshoots. If your session is during the warmer spring and summer months choose a lighter and more breathable fabric. If your session will take place in the fall or winter, warmer fabrics and textures are a great choice. You might want to consider layering a scarf or chunky knit cardigan over a dress. I go into detail about this in my blog post – What to Wear for your Spring Photoshoot, what to wear in Fall Photoshoot and What to wear in your summer photoshoot.
Accessories
Don’t be afraid of accessories! Accessories can add a finishing touch to your outfit. scarfs, flower crowns, hats, and belts all help tie together and complete your look.
– Belts: If you are wearing a loosely fitted dress, try to find a cute and simple skinny belt to accentuate that baby bump. This will help define your waistline and enhance any shirt or dress, flowy or fitted.
– Scarfs: A scarf can be a great way to add a pop of color and texture to your maternity photoshoot. Lightweight scarves or Pashmina are great options. Choose a scarf that coordinates with the color scheme of your outfit.
– Hats: They can add a unique and stylish touch to the pictures. Like sun hats, floppy hats, and berets. It’s also important to consider the color of the hat you choose. Neutral shades like beige, black, and gray will match with any outfit, while a pop of color can add a fun and playful touch to the photos.
– Flower crown: It can be a beautiful and romantic addition to a maternity photoshoot. Flowers can add a natural and organic touch to the photos and also help to create a whimsical and dreamy atmosphere. It’s also important to consider the colors of the flowers you choose. Soft pastels shades like pink, blue, and lavender can complement a neutral or soft color palette, while bolder shades like yellow, orange, and red can add a pop of color to the photos.
Jewelry
It can be a great way to add a little sparkle and shine to your maternity photoshoot. Some good options include:
– Necklaces: A simple and elegant necklace can add a touch of elegance to your maternity photos. Choose a necklace that compliments your clothing, such as a pendant necklace or a strand of pearls.
– Earrings: It can add a touch of elegance and femininity to your photos. Studs, hoops or dangle earrings can be great options.
– Bracelets: A simple and delicate bracelet can add a touch of elegance and femininity to your photos.
– Rings: Rings can add a touch of elegance and femininity to your photos. It’s important to keep in mind that jewelry should be used as an accent and not be the main focus of the outfit.
Keep it simple and choose jewelry that complements the overall look and feel of your photoshoot. It’s also a good idea to avoid jewelry that is too chunky or that makes noise, as it can be distracting in the photos.
Shoes
Be sure to wear shoes that are comfortable because you may be walking or standing throughout the shoot. Heels are not recommended late in pregnancy since they’re not as comfortable. A nice pair of sandals or ankle booties will provide stylish comfort during your photoshoot, allowing you to safely show off your beautiful baby bump.
Pamper Yourself
If you can, invest in a little pampering before the session, such as hair, makeup, and nails. The more beautiful you feel, the more it will show in your photos. Even if you can only afford one of these, it will make a difference in how you feel during your maternity session. A professional hair and makeup artist will know exactly how to make your look your best in photos! It’s also one less thing you’ll have to worry about, and pregnancy is a good time to get a little extra pampering in. At the same time please avoid heavy makeup. Opt for a matte finish for your foundation, powder, and lipstick to avoid any unwanted shine in the photos. Also with the trend issue, there’s no reason for a dark smokey eye during a maternity shoot. You want to look like an enhanced version of yourself, and that’s it. No need for crazy makeup. Same goes for nails!
Avoid tight hairstyles such as ponytails or braids as they can be unflattering and restrict your movement. Soft waves or curls can add a romantic and feminine touch to your photos, and also help to frame your face.Keep your hair loose, whether it’s up or down. It’s best to avoid any hairstyles that pull your hair back tightly and could be uncomfortable during the shoot.
I’m happy to provide artist recommendations, so if you’re considering having your hair & makeup done please ask and I’d be happy to send their info your way.
Coordinate with your Partner and Family
Coordinate, don’t match your dress with your partner and family members’ outfits. This means choosing analogous and complementary colors to your dress. I go into detail about this in my blog post – What to Wear for your Photoshoot.
